Independence

It’s such a simple word, yet within it lives a myriad of meanings, especially for those who know the history of what it took to achieve it.

This week most of us will be celebrating the 4th of July, Independence Day.

For some of us it conjures up childhood memories of endless summer days playing outside, where warm summer breezes were cooled by refreshing ice cold lemonade. Parents labored over a barbecue, cooking up the most delicious and comforting of foods. And then as the heat slowly faded into evening, the night sky was flooded with intense flashes of color and spectacle, bringing the day of remembrance and celebration to a beautiful crescendo.

Thinking of the 4th of July, and our nation’s independence makes me feel thankful. With the hectic nature of our modern schedules, it is easy to let these moments become an afterthought.

The beauty of this celebration isn’t just what it means to us, but what it means to the important people in our lives. It’s communal…an experience to be shared.

For many of us who work with seniors and/or veterans, this joyous occasion bears an even deeper connection. Believe it or not, there were moments in the recent past when the freedom and safety of this country didn’t feel so guaranteed.

So, as you celebrate this year, take a little time to find out what this day means for those around you. Connect, share, and give thanks.

Stay safe, and have a Happy Independence Day.
